Luckenbooths
Nestled right in the heart of Edinburgh’s bustling Royal Mile, Luckenbooths at 329 High Street isn’t just a restaurant-it’s a perfect pause from the city’s energetic rhythm. With a spacious layout that warmly welcomes everyone, including wheelchair users thanks to its fully accessible entrance, seating, and toilets, it’s a spot that feels inclusive without sacrificing style or comfort. Whether you're a local grabbing a slow lunch or a solo traveler people-watching from their outdoor terrace, Luckenbooths delivers a Scottish dining experience that blends tradition with contemporary charm.
From the moment you walk in, there's a cozy, modern vibe-polished wood, ambient lighting, and large windows overlooking the cobbled street life. It’s the kind of place where you can sit with a cappuccino and let the world go by or settle in for a full evening of hearty Scottish dishes and wine pairings from their great wine list.
Let’s talk about the food, because that’s where Luckenbooths really shines. One of the top draws here is their Full Scottish Breakfast Plate, which pulls no punches-think sizzling sausage, haggis, tattie scone, and eggs done your way. If you’re not quite up for the full breakfast marathon, the Blueberry Pancakes served with syrup and seasonal fruit are a lighter yet satisfying option that’s just as indulgent.
As the day rolls into lunch and dinner, the menu gracefully shifts. The Braised Beef Shin Pie is slow-cooked perfection, tucked under a golden crust and rich in flavor. Paired with a glass of red wine from their curated list, it’s a combination that feels like a warm embrace on a chilly Edinburgh evening. Seafood lovers often gravitate toward the Smoked Salmon starter or the more traditional Cullen Skink Soup, which offers a creamy, smoky depth that’s deeply satisfying.
For those seeking something heartier, the Lamb Shank and Steak and Frites don’t disappoint. The lamb is fall-off-the-bone tender, while the steak is seared just right and served with crispy fries that manage to stay light and flavorful. Vegetarian options like the Squash and Pumpkin Soup or the Garden Breakfast are not mere afterthoughts-they’re thoughtfully composed dishes that stand on their own.
There’s also a playful nod to local cuisine with their Haggis Bon-Bons, crispy on the outside with a peppery, rich interior. They make a great small plate to share, especially if you're sipping on one of their classic cocktails or diving into a dram of whisky.
Coffee lovers are also in for a treat here. From rich espressos to frothy cappuccinos, and even a curated tea selection for those wanting something gentler, the drinks menu complements the food experience without overpowering it. Desserts are equally worth sticking around for-though their changing selection means you’re always in for a surprise, regulars rave about their cakes and puddings.
While Luckenbooths doesn’t offer takeaway or delivery, the dine-in experience is truly where it excels. The warm, attentive staff and calm-but-alive atmosphere encourage diners to slow down and enjoy-not just the food, but the moment. The space is also known to cater well to solo diners, with window-side seating that’s ideal for a quiet meal and a book or a spontaneous conversation with staff who genuinely seem to enjoy what they do.
All in all, Luckenbooths hits that sweet spot between tourist gem and local favorite. It’s where quality Scottish cuisine meets friendly service and a setting that makes you want to linger a little longer.

Stopped by this because we saw other people’s fish and chips while walking by and it looked really good, can confirm it was indeed good! Not amazing, but still a good meal after a long day of exploring. Service was also very good!
It was really a pleasure to eat breakfast here. When the plate arrived I was laughing instantly Why? See the photos please. But it was really delicious... Friendly staff and lovely décorations.
Wonderful experience! Great staff, delicious food and not too loud. All 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals (I had a roasted cauliflower dish with feta peas on the side... and it was a filling veggie option!) Highly recommend!
I absolutely recommend this restaurant! The only thing we regret is not going back before leaving Edinburg! We were there for brunch or lunch. Service was fantastic and everyone was very welcoming and nice. I absolutely love and 100 percent recommend trying the local soup. It's not your typical american clam chowder but it's along the lines. Sticky toffee pudding was the bomb. And our server treated us to another local dessert since I was so indecisive. I really appreciated it!
My children and I stayed at Cheval Old Town Chambers during the Christmas period so we had the chance to try their breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. The food is locally sourced and delicious. the service staff was attentive and efficient although frazzled at times due to the peak period. We enjoyed all our meals and find the prices reasonably priced for a restaurant on the Royal Mile.
